Activate and Deactivate JMX Agents

Activating an agent instance starts the agent process. By default, an agent is activated after it is created through the Application Servers Administration dashboard. You can choose to manually activate an agent, either during agent creation, or at a later time (for example, after the agent has been deactivated for any reason). Only activated agents can collect data.

To activate an agent:

On the Application Servers Administration dashboard, in the Monitoring Agents table, click the name of the agent you want to activate.

In the list that opens, click Activate.
A task appears in the Task History table, where you can track the progress of the activation.

IMPORTANT: If the connection fails during activation, you may need to retry the connection (see Reconnect to an MBean Server ), or edit the connection settings (see Edit JMX Agent Connection Settings ).

Click the name of the agent again.

In the list that opens, click Start Data Collection.

Deactivating an agent stops the agent process on the monitored host and stops all data collection for that agent.

To deactivate an agent:

On the Application Servers Administration dashboard, in the Monitoring Agents table, click the name of the agent you want to deactivate.

In the list that opens, click Deactivate.
A task appears in the Task History table, where you can track the progress of the deactivation.

Start and Stop Data Collection

When you start data collection, the agent begins to monitor the applicable part of your environment and sends data about it to the Management Server. When you stop data collection for an agent, the agent remains activated but no longer collects information from the monitored host.

To stop data collection:

On the Application Servers Administration dashboard, in the Monitoring Agents table, click the name of the agent you want to stop collecting data.

In the list that opens, click Stop data collection.
A task appears in the Task History table, where you can track the progress of the task.

To re-start data collection for the selected agent, click Start data collection in the list.

Reconnect to an MBean Server

If your server went down but has not returned to service, or if you have changed the connection settings, the JMX agent automatically attempts to reconnect to the server at specified intervals. If necessary, you can force the agent to attempt to reconnect to the server. The option to Retry connection appears in the agent options only when applicable.

To reconnect to a server:

On the Application Servers Administration dashboard, in the Monitoring Agents table, click the name of the agent you want to reconnect.

In the list that opens, click Retry Connection.
If the attempt is successful, the agent starts collecting data and the green arrow icon appears in the Collection column.
If the agent connection fails, the Collection icon remains as a grey X icon. Review the connection log to determine why the connection is failing. For more information, see Review JMX Agent Connection Logs. If necessary, edit the connection settings. For more information, see Edit JMX Agent Connection Settings.

Review JMX Agent Connection Logs

This option allows you to quickly review the agent connection state changes. This is helpful when you are trying to diagnose connection issues between the JMX agent and the MBean Server.

For example, you may need to investigate an error in the Service URL. The log table lists the time at which the agent state changed from Collecting data to Running but not collecting data. This time may correspond to a server outage, or to when a connection setting on the server was changed.

To review a connection log:

On the Application Servers Administration dashboard, in the Monitoring Agents table, click the name of the agent whose connection log you want to review.

In the list that opens, click Get connection log.
The Connection Log dialog box opens. You can search for a specific time or message string using the Search box.
