Foglight Transaction Recorder 5.6.10 - Getting Started Guide

Getting Started with the Foglight Transaction Recorder

Foglight Transaction Recorder—The Foglight Transaction Recorder is a Windows-based application that is downloaded, installed, and used to create scripts that model the end user’s actions against a monitored server environment. These scripts are recorded in a rich graphical environment resembling an internet browser. Once recorded and played back, the user can set expected times that help determine acceptable time frames within which to run the script and its parts. Once scripts are replayed and satisfactorily configured, they are published to Foglight.
Foglight Transaction Recorder Advanced (provided by Tevron’s CitraTest)—Foglight Transaction Recorder Advanced is used when the applications being driven are thick client (not Web-based) or are Web-based and contain applets or objects not handled natively by the Foglight Transaction Recorder. A script created by Foglight Transaction Recorder Advanced is inserted into the Foglight Transaction Recorder with a special instruction. After playing this instruction, all of the results generated by Foglight Transaction Recorder Advanced are merged into one script result.
Foglight Transaction Player—The Foglight Transaction Player is a Foglight Agent used to play back the scripts recorded by Foglight Transaction Recorder/Advanced. The player requires agent supporting files to be downloaded and installed from the Foglight Management Server. In version 4.5 and later of the Foglight Transaction Recorder/Player, a new optional feature called the Intelligent Agent allows for more detailed information (including screen snapshots) for visible scripts and network statistics. This information is an extension of the console on the Foglight browser interface.
Foglight Transaction Player Intelligent Agent—A Web-based dashboard providing feedback on scripts running on a Foglight Transaction Player Agent. Details about Foglight Service Groups and Services can be viewed from the Intelligent Agent. Playback statistics, CPU%, and memory usage are tracked along with script response times and network activity. The Intelligent Agent can be accessed from the Foglight Web Console or by navigating directly to the Transaction Player agent machine.
Foglight Management Server—The Foglight Management Server is where scripts or services are configured into a Service Group that defines the application you are monitoring. These Service Groups are assigned to a Transaction Player agent to be played back at defined intervals, reporting their timings to the Foglight Management Server. These timings, using the advanced rules engine of Foglight, are compared to the “Expected Times” initially set during script recording, but can be overridden on the server. The rules engine can take any defined action based on the results.
