Explorer MBean View

When you select an MBean instance in either the All MBeans or MBean Structure tab of the JMX Explorer dashboard, the MBean view on the right is populated with the instance details.

Health and Alarms

The health icon indicates the health status of the MBean instance. If there are any outstanding alarms for the instance, you can review them by clicking the alarm indicator. For more information, see “Viewing, Acknowledging, and Clearing Alarms” in the Foglight for JMX User Help.

Metrics

Any key metrics for the MBean appear in the Metrics pane. By default, derived metrics are considered key metrics, as are raw metrics that do not have any associated derived metrics. You can customize the displayed metrics, and change whether or not a metric is considered a key metric by clicking Customize. For more information, see Managing Key Metrics.

Relationships

If the monitored MBeans have exposed relationships, those relationship are listed in the Relationships pane, and are grouped by their type: either Contains (containment relationship), or Refers To (referenced relationship). From this pane you can drill down to review details about the related instances. For more information, see Exposing MBean Relationships.

Sub-stats

Only some application server types (such as Oracle and WebLogic) provide sub-stats. If sub-stats are available for an MBean, and they are enabled in the server model, they are listed in this pane. For more information, see Selecting MBean Attributes for Collection.

Properties: Single Value|Observations

Properties (attributes) vary depending on the type of MBean selected. Each property links to a dialog box that displays more details.

Selecting an MBean Server to Review

If you have more than one MBean server configured for monitoring by the JMX agent, you can easily switch between them while remaining on the Explorer dashboard.

To select another MBean server:

At the top right of the JMX Explorer dashboard, click Select another MBean Server.

Select a server from the list.
The tables and views refresh with data relevant to the selected MBean server.

Managing Key Metrics

Managing Key Metrics

A key metric is a metric that may be an MBean key performance indicator. The JMX Explorer dashboard allows you to customize the MBean metric view by specifying which metrics should be considered key metrics. By default, all derived metrics are considered key metrics, as are raw metrics that do not have any associated derived metrics.

By default, only the key metrics appear in the Metrics pane.

Viewing All Metrics
To show all available metrics:

In the Metrics pane on the JMX Explorer dashboard, click the heading Metrics (showing x of x, key metrics only). A menu opens.

Click Show all Metrics. The Metrics pane refreshes, showing all available metrics.

You can also further customize the Metric view by manually specifying whether or not a metric should be considered a key metric and by editing the individual display preferences for a metric. For more information, see Changing Metric Display Preferences.

Defining Key Metrics

To change a metric type to key metric:

On the JMX Explorer dashboard, in the Metrics pane, click Customize.
The Customize Metric Display dialog box opens.
The Key Metric columns, Is Key Metric? and Set By, define the key metrics and indicate how the metric was defined as a key metric (that is, either by a user, or by the system).

Click the edit icon in the row for the metric you want to customize.
The Metric Preferences dialog box opens.
There are two options for defining the metric type: Let the system decide, and Set it explicitly.
The following rules are used to determine the metric type when you select Let the system decide:

If a metric is a derived metric, the system considers it to be a key metric
•
If a metric is raw (that is, it is an MBean attribute itself) and has no associated derived metrics, the system considers it a key metric
•
If a metric is raw and has one or more associated derived metrics, it is not considered a key metric

To manually set the metric type, select Set it explicitly from the Key Metric list.

Click the Is key metric? check box to set the metric as a key metric.
Clear the check box if the metric was a key metric, but you no longer want it to be.

Click OK to save your changes and close the Metric Preferences dialog box.
The Customize Metric Display dialog box refreshes to display your changes.

NOTE: To discard all your changes and return to the view as it was initially, click Reset Preferences. The metric preferences revert to their default values.

Click Close.
The Metric pane updates with your changes.
