Shutting down appliances

You should always use the Console Program to shut down appliances.


	CAUTION: For physical appliances, never force a shut down or cut power while the appliance is on. This can cause database corruption or damage the appliance hardware. If you need to shut down a physical appliance from the box, lightly press the power button to stop all services and shut down the appliance. Avoid holding the button because this action causes a forced shut down.

To shut down an appliance:

From the main menu, select Shut Down.

Select Shutdown.

A confirmation message appears.

To continue, select Yes.

The Console Program stops all active processes, and then shuts down the appliance.

Rebooting appliances

When rebooting an appliance, it takes a few minutes for the Console Program to restart all the processes on the appliance.

To reboot the appliance:

From the main menu, select Shut Down.

Select Reboot.

A confirmation message appears.

To continue, select Yes.

The Console Program stops all active processes, and then automatically restarts them.

Updating software

You can update the software components hosted on an appliance, such as the Sniffer or Archiver.


	NOTE: This procedure is generally reserved for troubleshooting. Instead of using the Console Program as described here to update a single appliance, a Foglight user with the APM Administrator role can update software on all appliances at the same time from the Foglight browser interface. For more information, see “Updating appliance software” in the Foglight APM Administration and Configuration Guide or online help.

Upgrading from a PKG file

To update an appliance from a PKG file:

Obtain the PKG file from Quest Support.

Copy the PKG file to the appropriate location under the home directory. For example, if you are logged in as the setup user, copy the PKG file to the /home/setup directory.

From the main menu, select Advanced Options.

Select Update Software, then Upgrade From PKG File.

Select Yes to continue with the installation.

Reboot the appliance to complete the update. For more information, see Rebooting appliances.
