This step-by-step article describes how to turn on or turn off debug logging in Quest Recovery Manager for Active Directory. If you are an administrator, you can use the debug logging feature of Recovery Manager to help troubleshoot issues.
Quest Recovery Manager includes the debug logging feature for support and troubleshooting purposes. When debug logging is turned on, Quest Recovery Manager creates several log files. The log files have .log file name extension, and are located on the Recovery Manager server as well as on the Domain Controllers being backed up.
On the Recovery Manager server, the log files can be found in:
Windows 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Quest Software\RMAD\Logs
Windows 2008: C:\Users\All Users\Quest Software\RMAD\Logs
On the Domain Controller, the log files get created in the below location:
- %windir%QuestRecoveryManager (typically C:\Windows\QuestRecoveryManager)
A) To enable basic debug logging
1. From the Recovery Manager console right-click on the top node Recovery Manager for Active Directory and choose Settings.
2. From the Settings tab, enable the "Use diagnostic logging" option.
3. Click "Apply"
This will update the LogLevel registry key:
- For 32-bit machine, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quest Software\Quest Recovery Manager for Active Directory\
- For 64-bit machine, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Quest Software\Quest Recovery Manager for Active Directory\
Value name: LogLevel
Data type: DWORD
Value data: Change the value from 2 to 5 (Hexadecimal)
B) To enable comprehensive debug logging
1. Enable logging through the basic debug logging method as descibed in the section (A)
2. Navigate to the following registry key:
- For 32-bit machine, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quest Software\Quest Recovery Manager for Active Directory\
- For 64-bit machine (also modify the 32bit location mentioned above), HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Quest Software\Quest Recovery Manager for Active Directory
3. Modify the below value:
Value name: LogLevel
Data type: DWORD
Value data: Change the value to 11 (Hexadecimal, for comprehensive logging)
C) To turn OFF debug logging (which should be done once logs have been obtained)
1. From the Recovery Manager console right-click on the top node Recovery Manager for Active Directory and choose Settings.
2. From the Settings tab, uncheck the "Use diagnostic logging" option.
3. Click "Apply"
This will update the registry key to the original value:
Value name: LogLevel
Data type: DWORD
Value data: 2 (Hexadecimal)
****WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that can damage the operating system and the software installed. Quest cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.***
If Recovery Manager for Active Directory is installed on a Windows 2008 machine the log files will be located in C:\Users\All Users\Quest Software\RMAD\Logs (the All Users folder may be hidden)
