Changing the trace directory location

By default, the trace container directory is created under the NetVault Backup installation directory. You can modify the default settings to specify a new location for the container directory. When tracing is enabled, a session directory is created under the container directory; all trace files generated during the session reside in this directory.

NOTE: The trace container directory cannot be changed when tracing is enabled.
To change the trace container directory:

In the Navigation pane, click Change Settings.

To change the trace directory on the NetVault Backup Server:
•
On the Configuration page, click Server Settings. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing.

To change the trace directory on a NetVault Backup Client:
•
On the Configuration page, click Client Settings. In the NetVault Backup Clients table, select the client, and click Next. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing.

On the Configuration page, click Server Settings. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing. On the Diagnostic Trace Settings page, click Client Trace Settings, and select the client.

On the Diagnostic Trace Settings page, click Trace Configuration. In the Trace Configuration Options dialog box, configure the following setting:
•
Trace Container Directory: Specify the new location for the trace container directory. You must provide the full filepath.

Click Apply to apply the new settings and close the dialog box.

Enabling tracing using NetVault WebUI and Txtconfig

You can use the NetVault Backup WebUI or Txtconfig utilities to enable tracing at service startup. At service startup, tracing is enabled on all processes. The NetVault Backup WebUI or Txtconfig utilities do not provide the options to start tracing immediately, start and stop tracing at the specified time, or enable tracing for specific processes.

To enable diagnostic tracing using NetVault WebUI:

In the Navigation pane, click Change Settings.

To disable diagnostic tracing on the NetVault Backup Server:
•
On the Configuration page, click Server Settings. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing.

To disable diagnostic tracing on a NetVault Backup Client:
•
On the Configuration page, click Client Settings. In the NetVault Backup Clients table, select the client, and click Next. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing.

On the Configuration page, click Server Settings. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing. On the Diagnostic Trace Settings page, click Client Trace Settings, and select the clients. You can select multiple clients from this page.

On the Diagnostic Trace Settings page, click Enable Tracing.
To enable diagnostic tracing using Txtconfig:
1
In a terminal or command prompt window, type txtconfig, and press Enter or Return.

On the Machine page, press p to view the main menu, and then press the option number for the Diagnostic Tracing page.

Press the option number for the Enable trace on service startup setting to change the value to ON.

To save the settings and quit Txtconfig, press s, and then press q.

NOTE: Tracing is not enabled until the next service startup. For more information about restarting the NetVault Backup Service, see Starting or stopping the NetVault Backup Service.

Disabling tracing

Tracing can affect performance and generate large amounts of data on the server and client machines. After your issue is resolved, make sure that tracing is disabled on all relevant NetVault Backup machines.

To disable diagnostic tracing:

In the Navigation pane, click Change Settings.

To disable diagnostic tracing on the NetVault Backup Server:
•
On the Configuration page, click Server Settings. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing.

To disable diagnostic tracing on a NetVault Backup Client:
•
On the Configuration page, click Client Settings. In the NetVault Backup Clients table, select the client, and click Next. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing.

On the Configuration page, click Server Settings. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing. On the Diagnostic Trace Settings page, click Client Trace Settings, and select the clients. You can select multiple clients from this page.

On the Diagnostic Trace Settings page, click Disable Tracing.

Deleting trace session directories

If trace files are no longer required, you can delete the session directories to remove all trace files generated during the selected sessions.

To delete the trace session directories:

In the Navigation pane, click Change Settings.

To delete trace session directories from the NetVault Backup Server:
•
On the Configuration page, click Server Settings. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing.

To delete trace session directories from a NetVault Backup Client:
•
On the Configuration page, click Client Settings. In the NetVault Backup Clients table, select the client, and click Next. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing.

•
On the Configuration page, click Server Settings. Under System and Security, click Diagnostic Tracing. On the Diagnostic Trace Settings page, click Client Trace Settings. Select the client, and click Browse Available Traces.

In the list of trace sessions, select the sessions that you want to delete. You can select multiple trace session directories.

Click Delete, and in the confirmation dialog box, click OK.

NOTE: You cannot delete an active trace session directory.
