Modify Logging Destination (4272397)

There is a business requirement to use a different location for the ControlPoint logs.

The ControlPoint log writes to the below default locations, depending on its built:

• ControlPoint for SharePoint 2007: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\Axceler\log
• ControlPoint for SharePoint 2010: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\14\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\Axceler\log
• ControlPoint for SharePoint 2013: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\15\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\Axceler\log
• ControlPoint for SharePoint 2016: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\16\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\Axceler\log
• ControlPoint for Office 365: C:\Program Files\Metalogix\ControlPoint\LAYOUTS\Axceler\log

But, it can be written to different locations based on client's preferences.

• To move to a different directory on the local file system:

1. Open the ..<SharePoint Hive>\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\Axceler/web.config file using any text editor such as Notepad.
2. Modify the section entitled fileName so that the value equals the full path of the new log file destination (e.g. C:\temp\xcAdmin.log). NOTE: Changing the name of the log file is not supported.

   

3. Save the file and and recycle the ControlPoint application pool in IIS Manager. New logs will be written in the new path.

• To move ControlPoint's logging to ULS:

1. Open the ControlPoint Configuration Site (e.g. http://servername:1818).
2. Create a new item in the ControlPoint Settings List using the following values:

   Parameter Name: WriteToULS
   Parameter Value: true
   Category: Special Purpose

3. Recycle the ControlPoint application pool in IIS Manager.

• To move ControlPoint's logging to Event Viewer:

1. Open the ..<SharePoint Hive>\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\Axceler/web.config file using any text editor such as Notepad. 
2. Search for the EventLog parameter.
3. Set its value to the desired level of severity (1 = SEVERE, 2 = ERROR, 3 = INFORMATION, 4 = VERBOSE).
4. Save the file and and recycle the ControlPoint application pool in IIS Manager. Events of the marked severity will be written to the Event Log.
