Maintaining appliances

Over time, you need to perform maintenance tasks on your appliances. You may also need to troubleshoot issues that develop on an appliance. The Console Program that you used to set up your appliances is also the tool you use to perform a variety of administrative and troubleshooting tasks.

NOTE: In most cases, the appliance can remain running during administrative tasks. If the Console Program needs to restart the appliance, for example when you change a control port IP address, you are prompted to confirm the action.

Launching the Console Program

When you set up an appliance for the first time, you launched the Console Program in one of the following ways:

•
Physical Appliance with Monitor and Keyboard: See Starting physical appliances and configuring remote access.
•
Physical Appliance with DRAC: See Launching the Console Program remotely with DRAC.
•
Virtual Appliances: See Powering on virtual appliances.

When you need to troubleshoot an appliance or perform administrative tasks, you can use these same processes to access an appliance and launch its Console Program.

Alternatively, for physical appliances, if you enabled SSH for a user account, you can use an SSH client to access appliances remotely. The following two procedures describe how to use SSH from a Microsoft® Windows®-based or UNIX®-based computer:

Accessing physical appliances using SSH on Microsoft Windows systems

If you want to launch the Console Program from a computer running Microsoft® Windows®, you need to install an SSH client, such as PuTTY. You can download PuTTY from http://rc.vintella.com/topics/putty/. It takes only a few minutes to install.

To login from a device running Microsoft Windows:

On your Microsoft Windows device, launch PuTTY.
The PuTTY Configuration dialog box opens.

In the Host Name (or IP address) box, type an appliance’s Control Port IP address or DNS name.

Ensure that the SSH option is selected.

Click Open.
The first time you connect to an appliance, a warning message appears, indicating that the RSA fingerprint cannot be authenticated.

To accept the RSA certificate, in the PuTTY Security Alert message box, click Yes.

In the console window, log in using the SSH-enabled user credentials you specified when you set up the appliance for the first time. For more information, see Enabling SSH and changing the default password.
The Console Program starts.

Accessing physical appliances using SSH on UNIX systems

Most administrators with UNIX® or Linux® workstations already have command-line tools installed for SSH and SCP.

To log in from a UNIX or Linux workstation:

Start the SSH client by typing the following at the command prompt:
ssh -l setup [myappliance]
The first time you connect to an appliance, you see a warning that the RSA fingerprint cannot be authenticated.

To accept the RSA certificate, click Yes.

In the console window, log in using the SSH-enabled user credentials you specified when you set up the appliance for the first time. For more information, see Enabling SSH and changing the default password.
The Console Program starts.
