Error running a query using linked server specified by IP address: "Processing of results from SQ (4222026)

Error running a query using linked server specified by IP address such as below results in the following error. This query works OK in other applications such as Management Studio.

Select top 1 * from [xx.x.xx.xx].users.dbo.audit --- where [xx.x.xx.xx] is the IP of the linked server

Processing of results from SQL Server failed because of an invalid multipart name "10.1.58.98.users.dbo.audit", the current limit of "4" is insufficient.

Toad does not currently support this.
