I am trying to reverse-engineer a MS SQL Server database with around 250 tables. Even when choosing to display "Entities only" and then clicking the auto layout, the tables are arranged in a very weird way and are heavily overlapping.
The autolayout feature, it is only suitable for smaller models only. For larger model, we recommend dividing it into submodels and lay out the tables at your convenience.
See the Help file | Features topic | Submodels.

Creating Submodels
The Submodel feature helps you to organize your work. You can select multiple entities and add them to a new submodel. Later, you will be allowed to generate SQL script only for selected submodel or to generate an HTML or an RTF report of the submodel.
There are two ways to create a submodel:
A:
From the Model menu, select Submodels. The Submodels dialog opens.
- Click Add and define the Submodel Name.
- On the Entities tab select entities you wish to assign to the submodel.
- Click the Grid tab to set the grid settings.
- Click the Advanced tab to specify the submodels display settings.
- Click OK to confirm changes.
B:
Select multiple entities in the main model. (Use SHIFT to make multiple items selection.)
- Right-click any of the selected entities and select New Submodel. A new Submodel dialog opens. Here define the Submodel Name.
- On the Entities tab select entities you wish to assign to the submodel.
- Click the Grid tab to set the grid settings.
- Click the Advanced tab to specify the submodels display settings.
- Click OK to confirm changes.
