Introducing Foglight Integration for OpenManage Essentials

Dell Foglight™ Integration for OpenManage Essentials enables you to view the detailed hardware data that OpenManage™ Essentials collects about your ESX servers in the Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise Edition dashboards. This powerful combination provides you with a single-pane-of-glass to monitor your ESX servers within your entire monitored environment - so you can quickly diagnose issues from the symptom to the root cause and resolution. By offering this comprehensive visibility into your monitored environment, Foglight helps ensure that cross-functional teams collaborate on and prioritize issues that matter most to businesses.

Understanding the components

There are a few components that work together so that you can view the OpenManage Essentials data for your monitored ESX servers in Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise Edition.
OpenManage Essentials
OpenManage Essentials is available with Dell servers and can integrate with third-party hardware to remotely monitor servers. The console receives data from iDRAC and OMSA so that you can manage and maintain the health of your hardware.
Integration Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC)
(iDRAC) is a management system that remotely connects to your ESX servers. It stays online even if the ESX server is down, so you can continue monitoring your ESX. iDRAC provides real-time monitoring data that it sends to OpenManage Essentials. It also sends alerts to notify you about hardware issues.
OpenManage Server Administrator
OpenManage Server Administrator is also a system management solution that administrators can use to locally or remotely manage their server systems. It integrates with OpenManage Essentials to provide monitoring data, but it does not send alerts.
Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise Edition
Using the Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise Edition (hereafter referred to as Foglight for Virtualization EE) dashboards, you can combine Foglight’s powerful monitoring and analytics with the OpenManage Essentials data to get full visibility of your virtual infrastructure. Use the comprehensive dashboards to monitor the health of your ESX servers and reduce the performance impact of changes.
Foglight Agent Manager
Foglight Agent Manager is a client application that manages Foglight agents installed on monitored hosts. It provides a centralized communications link between the Management Server and the agents. When you integrate OpenManage Essentials with Foglight for Virtualization EE, the Foglight Agent Manager communicates with OpenManage Essentials to receive the ESX server hardware data to display in the Foglight dashboards.
VMware vCenter
VMware®vCenter® is the only virtualization management tool that is supported for Foglight Integration for OpenManage Essentials. After the integration, you can discover the ESX servers from vCenter that are monitored in OpenManage Essentials and Foglight for Virtualization EE. If the ESX server is monitored by both products, it displays in the Foglight for Virtualization EE dashboards.

Integration Agent Installation

Foglight™ Integration for OpenManage Essentials enables you to view the detailed hardware data that OpenManage Essentials collects on your ESX servers in the Foglight for Virtualization EE dashboards. The integration configures the Foglight Agent Manager to communicate with the OpenManage Essentials server.

Installing the integration agent

To integrate Foglight for Virtualization EE with OpenManage Essentials (OME), set up a data collection agent which allows Foglight Agent Manager to communicate with the public API of the OpenManage server.
Prerequisite: You must have an OpenManage Essentials server running for the integration.
To integrate Foglight for Virtualization EE with the OpenManage Essentials server:

Log in to Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise Edition.

On the navigation panel, under Homes, select Environment Overview.

On the Administer tab, in the Monitor a New Virtual Domain section, click Connect to OpenManage Essentials.
The Agent Setup Wizard opens.

On the Select an Agent Host page, choose the host for the new OME Agent. This is a host where you have an existing Foglight Agent Manager installed.

On the Select OME Server page, type the name of the OME Server. The default port number for the OME server is 2607.

On the Credential Verification page, choose to add the host to a new or existing credential.

If you choose to add the host to a new credential:
a
On the Create New Credential page, type the required information.
•
Credential Name: Any name that you want to call this credential.
•
Domain: Required only if it is configured for your host.
•
User: The user name for this credential.
•
Password: A password for the user.

Select the lockbox and the click the lockbox icon to allow the agent to use the credential.
OR
If you chose to add the host to an existing credential:
a
On the Select Existing Credential page, chose the credential.

Click the lockbox icon to release the lockbox to the client. This allows the agent to use the credential.

On the Summary page, review your settings.

Click Finish to complete the integration.
