When the tnsnames.ora file resides on the network, the database dropdown list on the Oracle Logon window is blank. None of the entries in the tnsnames.ora file are displayed.
WORKAROUND:
1. Manually type in the connect string for the desired database instead of using the dropdown.
or
2. Add a TNS_ADMIN string value into the registry as follows:
a. Go to Start | Run | Regedit
b. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE
c. On the right hand pane, right-click and select New | String Value
d. Right-click on new entry and rename the file to "TNS_ADMIN"
e. Double-click on "TNS_ADMIN" and enter the path of your tnsnames.ora file
--ie: D:\ORACLE\ORA81\Network\Admin
