RMAD upgrade from version 10.0.1 to version 10.2 fails with error: Setup Ended Prematurely. In the MSI installation log is observed errors related to SQL installation failure:
This could happen if you already have an existing SQL Server Express installation in your RMAD server and if install SQL Express 2016 option is selected during RMAD upgrade.
When selecting the option to install SQL Express during RMAD Install / Upgrade, a new instance is created and by default is named QUESTRMAD, but if there is an existing instance named QUESTRMAD in an old installation of SQL Express, this might cause the entire installation or upgrade process to fail with a Setup Ended Prematurely error.
1- Run RMAD setup, follow the prompts and remove or disable Reports Feature and Forest Recovery Persistence feature.
2- Follow the prompts until setup completes successfully.
3- In the RMAD installation files, go to Setup folder and then go to Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Express and run SQLEXPR_x64_ENU
4- Follow the install wizard and in the Instance Configuration screen type for example QUESTRMAD2016 or any other name that you want in the Named Instance field and Instance ID field and follow the prompts until the installation is complete. The idea is to create a new instance with a different name and not the same QUESTRMAD default name.
5- Run RMAD setup and this time enable or include Reports Feature and Forest Recovery Persistence.
6- Select Do Not install SQL Express 2016, and in the next screen type the new instance name in the format SERVERNAME\INSTANCENAME, for example RMAD\QUESTRMAD2016.
7- Follow the prompts until setup is complete.
After the above is done, the next step to complete the upgrade process is to upgrade all Backup Agents and Forest Agents if applicable.
