"Had Media Error" or "Medium Error" messages such as the following SCSI *hardware* errors are seen in failed Restore binary logs:
MEDREAD :02124 145 0 214651 Position to the block requested [############] forward
TAPESCSI :02124 5 0 214651 Position Block (BEGIN)
SCSI :02124 14 0 214651 CMD SPACE [ 11 00 7f ff ff 00 ]
SCSI :02124 16 0 214738 CMD STATUS 'GOOD' [0]
SCSI :02124 20 0 214738 CMD RETURN VALUE 0
SCSI :02124 14 0 214738 CMD SPACE [ 11 00 7f ff ff 00 ]
SCSI :02124 16 0 215146 CMD STATUS 'CHECK CONDITION' [2]
SCSI :02124 17 0 215146 CMD SENSE KEY 'MEDIUM ERROR ' [3] - ASC 14 ASCQ 00
SCSI :02124 18 0 215146 CMD SENSE INFO 'RECORDED ENTITY NOT FOUND'
SCSI :02124 20 0 215146 CMD RETURN VALUE 2
TAPESCSI :02124 73 0 215146 Unexpected error positioning media to block
These errors are from the tape drive itself, so NetVault is not the one complaining:
SCSI :02124 17 0 215146 CMD SENSE KEY 'MEDIUM ERROR ' [3] - ASC 14 ASCQ 00
SCSI :02124 18 0 215146 CMD SENSE INFO 'RECORDED ENTITY NOT FOUND'
These are all “SCSI” hardware errors, not NetVault errors, "TAPESCSI :02124 73 0 215146 Unexpected error positioning media to block”. None of this is NetVault.
Positioning errors usually mean that the required data for your Restore located on that particular tape begins at block [############], but your tape drive is having an issue positioning the tape to block [############], which is why you’re getting the error. Then because it cannot position itself to the right place, the hardware reports the problem back to your OS and the restore job has no option but to fail due to an inability of the *hardware* to provide the necessary data.
You will need to contact your hardware vendor to have them troubleshoot exactly why the tape drive cannot position itself at the right place on the media to read the data.
Similar cases have been seen where the vendor provided a new firmware patch for the customer's problematic drive, which immediately resolves their issue. Your issue may or may not require a similar solution from your vendor.
