A filer volume was backed up using the NetVault NDMP or SnapMirror to Tape plugins, but it cannot be restored to another NDMP Appliance or a system running Windows, Linux or any other operating system.
The restore job could include the following error entry:
System TRANSFER Failed to spawn 'NDMP Client', unable to resolve name of executable
A NetVault NDMP backup cannot be restored to Windows, Linux, or any other OS. The backup file system structure and file metadata is not compatible with these operating systems. The data stream on the tape is issued by the filer's dump command and can only be restored to a compatible appliance.
An example of this is NetApp filers running ONTAP. A backup from a NetApp filer can be restored to another filer running ONTAP only if they are using the same file system. For instance, some IBM filers also run ONTAP OS, but restoring the data from the NetApp saveset could fail if the OS can't interprete the file system structure. On most cases, the filer OS is proprietary. Please, review the documentation of the target filer to ensure it is using the same file system. Please notice that newer version of a file system might not be backward compatible.
For further information on NetVault supported filers, please check Supported NAS Appliances and NDMP Compatibility on NetVault Current Version Compatibility Guide.
