Date - JUN 2009
Affected Product & Version - NVBU 8.2.2
Affected Module & Version - Exchange Server APM 4.x
OS Version - Windows 2003 and 2008
Application Information - Exchange 2007
Symptoms:
After creating a NetVault Virtual Client to add backup a CCR cluster, the Exchange Server APM cannot be used or configured.
Although the Virtual Client configuration is correct, the following pop up message is displayed each time the plugin is accessed on the Backup window:
"Plugin died unexpectedly"
Trace on the Exchange Server APM shows:
1 EXCHOPS :4020 14 0 153553 Making call to HrESEBackupPrepare on server 'EXCHMB', application 'Microsoft Information Store'
1 EXCHUTIL:4020 700 0 153553 Method ExchangeEtkCheckHrIfSuccess: starts
1 EXCHUTIL:4020 928 0 153553 ExchangeEtkCheckHrIfSuccess: hrLast = c7ff1005.GetLastError() = -2147221233
1 EXCHUTIL:4020 642 0 153553 Message return value: 'Error returned from a callback function call (0xX).'
The Application Event logs show:
Event ID 9638 from source MSExchangeIS:
E r r E S E C B G e t D a t a b a s e s I n f o 0 x 8 0 0 4 0 1 0 f 0 Failed to get the VServer from the Server Name.
Reason:
The APM makes a call to the Information Store service to get the list of Storage Groups and Databases so we can browse it successfully.
However this function call fails because the Vserver doesn't resolve to the Virtual IP address provided in the apm configuration.
In a cluster scenario, the Virtual IP address must resolve (forward and reverse) to the Virtual Server's Network Name.
If the apm call cannot find a Virtual Information Store behind the provided Virtual IP address, the apm will crash.
- before creating the NeVault Virtual Client, make sure the Cluster configuration and network settings are verified.
- make sure the Virtual Server's network name corresponds to the Virtual IP address. Forward and reverse DNS lookups must resolve successfully.
