Title: How to use nvdeviceeject with LTO standalone drives
Date: FEB 07
NV Version: All
OS Version: All
Description:
Steps to perform to successfully eject a tape after a backup on LTO standalone drives
Symptoms:
When using nvdeviceeject the tape does not get fully ejected and when the drive is polled the tape is reloaded.
If the tape is unloaded from the GUI it still does not fully eject the tape and it will be reloaded on the next poll of the tape drive.
If the tape is ejected after the drive has been polled and a new tape is loaded the tape label is not recognized as the database still thinks it has the original tape in the drive. This is because the the tape has been replaced without Netvault involvement.
1. Upgrade to at least Netvault 7.4.5 on server and clients.
2. Set the “time between polling the empty drive” = 0 . This is done with a right click on the desired drive, selecting Configuration and modify the parameter (if you have other physical and virtual drives as well, then all these drives have to have the polling set to zero too. Otherwise the standalone drive polling wont take effect).
3. Set up pre script with the nvcheckdrive command and add to desired job(s)
Example (for Windows):
"\Program Files\BakBone Software\NetVault\util\nvcheckdrive" -servername -drivename
Example (For Linux/Unix):
/usr/netvault/util/nvcheckdrive -servername nvserver -drivename LTO
Note: nvserver = the netvault server that controls the drive.
Note: LTO = represents the name of your drive
4. Set up post script with the nvdeviceeject command and add to desired job(s)
Example (for Windows):
"\Program Files\BakBone Software\NetVault\util\nvdeviceeject" -server -devicename
Example (For Linux/Unix):
/usr/netvault/util/nvdeviceeject -server nvserver -devicename LTO
NOTE 1: If the drivename/devicename contains spaces or special characters such as colons and dashes ( : and - ) then it will need to be enclosed in double quotes ( " ). Eg: "nvserver: 2-0.5.0 (IBM ULTRIUM TD3)".
NOTE 2: Please re-start the netvault services within the Configurator - Service tab for the polling change to be picked up by the nvdevice process.
NOTE 3: If you have additional drives to the standalond drive i.e. virtaul (VTL) and/or from a tape library, then you will also have to change the polling for these as well.
NOTE 4: This can easily be setup in NVBU 9.2 version and below, but with NVBU 10 and above, the polling setting is not available via the browser and only via command line (CLI).
These commands are not in the NVBU CLI Guide, but are only in the NVBU 10.0.1 Administrators Guide, as only introduced in that version.
Further information is in Appendix A of the NVBU 10.0.1 Administrators Guide on the following link:
https://support.quest.com/netvault-backup/technical-documents
The polling is mentioned in Appendix A under the “Configuring general settings for tape drives” section.
The path to enter for the standalone drive is mentioned in Appendix A under the “Configuring default settings for tape drives” section.
An example of this would be:
deviceconfig -username default -drivemachine <Name of your NetVault Server> -libraryname <Name of the standalone drive as seen in Manage Devices section>
So for a VTL if you have this as well, you can use the following example:
deviceconfig -username default -drivemachine <Name of your NetVault Server> -drivepath <Path of where your VTL resides e.g. C:\VTL\MyVTL-2\drives\1>
Note: All characters are case sensitive.
As mentioned in Appendix A, once you have entered the appropriate path, a list of settings will appear.
You can then go into each item and change them.
Once you have finished changing the settings, click on “b” for back and you will end up in the main menu for that path again.
Once in that menu, you can enter “s” and enter to save all the changes and you will see a series of dots appear and then “ok” at the end to confirm that all items have been saved.
Click on "q" to quit that menu.
So once you are in that menu and to check the polling status, select item 2 for Configuration > select 3 for Time between polling empty drive > enter a value of 0 (zero) and you’ll see the value change in that menu list.
Click on “b” for back and then on “s” and enter to save the changes.
