Restoring a backed up SQL database from one SQL server to be restored to a new SQL server. Customer has a full database backup and a series of incremental backups to restore to the new machine. What is the procedure for restoring the backups to a new database? At which point is SQL database recovery carried out?
First of all a 'Tail-Log backup' needs to be performed on the source machine where the full and incremental jobs were originally performed. This is to retrieve transactions that have been done since the last incremental completed. The restore process is then carried out to the target server starting with the full then the differential/incremental backups, and finally the tail-log backup at which point database recovery is performed:
