Description:
Device manager shows an NDMP attached drive as DRIVE (X) (Locked by Session(Hard). and it is unresponsive to commands.
Job Manager may show jobs writing to media though in actuality are doing nothing at all.
This situation is typically caused by a hung NDMP device session between the NDMP server (filer) and NDMP client (NetVault server) with NDMP client installed). An NDMP device session can become hung pretty much anytime the connection is unexpectedly broken since the NDMP protocol has no provision for reconnection. For example cycling an NDMP attached library or a hard media error temporarily knocking the drive off-line. Normally re-starting NDMP on the NDMP server is all that is required to resolve this condition. On NetApp filers this can be accomplished by telnetting into the filer and issuing the following commands:
ndmpd killall
ndmpd off
ndmpd on
ndmpd status (shows if all strays processes have been eliminated)
For other supported filers see the manufacturers documentation.
