When using the Oracle plugin with RMAN jobs that are triggered from SAP, lots of jobs automatically get generated in NetVault. There can be as many as one job per archive log file. This affects performance, as drive locks are constantly released and re-obtained, and it also affects manageability in NetVault.
It is advisable to modify the SAP configuration so that it groups several files into one backup request. This can be achieved by modifying the init .sap file for BRBACKUP, and changing the "rman_filesperset" option to something like "rman_filesperset = 100".
This will ensure that SAP groups more than one file per "set", resulting in far fewer jobs at the NetVault backend. Please note that this will only backups going forward - restores of savesets that were generated previously will still spawn a large number of jobs because the original backup was split across lots of individual savesets.
