Configuring a cleaning slot
If you run into problems configuring the Library for Cleaning Tapes follow these instructions.
NOTE: Please make sure that the folloiwng items have been implemented before proceeding with this solution:
A] Make sure that the tape library has been disabled for cleaning media, as NetVault Backup needs to have full control over all its media. This can be changed within the tape library web interface.
B] Make sure that the tape library has been setup for Random Mode, as Sequential Mode is not supported. This can be changed within the tape library web interface. Further information is within the folloiwng KBA:
https://support.quest.com/netvault-backup/kb/128130
Before adding the cleaning slot or tape barcode it should be established whether the drive is generic or not as the drive will require setting up before the cleaning slot/tape.
The supported library document will tell you if the drive in your library is generic or not. There is s URL for this document below.
By default drives are set up as non generic.
If your drive is generic right click the drive in Device Management, select Configure, select the Generic cleaning tab, select Use Generic Cleaning and then ok.
Identify your library type using the "NetVault® Backup Supported VTLs, Libraries, Tape and Optical Drives" document:
Latest release - https://support.quest.com/netvault-backup/technical-documents
NetVault 9.2 - https://support.quest.com/netvault-backup/9.2/technical-documents/
And check what cleaning method it supports.
1) Remove any cleaning tapes from the library, and then start NetVault.
2) Open the device management screen, and right click on the library.
3) Select Modify from the right click menu.
This will open a new screen called "Modify Library"
4) Click on the configure tab.
5) Right click on the Library again, but this time select Configure.
6) Click on the cleaning tab.
7) Ensure the "Automatic cleaning supported" option is enabled.
8) Then enter the cleaning slot you wish the cleaning media to reside in, and specify the barcode of the cleaning media. Click "OK".
9) If the library needs "Generic" cleaning, right-click on your tape Drive(s) in the "Modify Library" window and select "Configure". There will be a "Generic Cleaning" tab, on which you will have to tick the "Use Generic Cleaning" option. You can also specify the length of the cleaning cycle here, as well as whether the drive needs a load command to initiate a cleaning cycle.
10) Re-save the Library to save these changes.
Once these changes have been saved, you will now notice that (providing you specified the media slot) one of your slots now shows up as a cleaning slot.
Stop the NetVault services, load the cleaning media into the relevant media slot and start the NetVault services again.
Now you are able to configure the cleaning support.
1) Right click on the cleaning slot and select the option "Life"
2) Enter the number of lives you wish the cleaning media to have (by default, this is set to zero lives).
3) Right click on one of the drives and select "Clean Properties"
4) This enables you to specify the circumstances under which a drive would be cleaned (note, this is per drive).
5) Repeat for all drives in the library.
Note: you can also initiate an immediate cleaning cycle by right clicking on a drive and selecting the option "Clean".
The cleaning media configuration is different in NetVault Backup 10.x and above i.e. is done via command line.
These commands are not in the NVBU 10.x CLI Guide, but are only in the NVBU 10.0.1 Administrators Guide onwards, as only introduced in that version.
Further information and commands are in Appendix A of the NVBU 10.0.1 Administrators Guide on the following link:
https://support.quest.com/netvault-backup/technical-documents
As mentioned in Appendix A, once you have entered the appropriate path for the tape library and/or drive, a list of settings will appear.
You can then go into each item and change them there.
Once you have finished changing the settings, click on “b” for back and you will end up in the main menu for that path again.
Once in that menu, you can enter “s” and hit enter to save all the changes. You will see a series of dots appear and then “ok” at the end to confirm that all items have been saved.
