Problems adding NetVault Client in Client Management for a Windows Virtual Machine, after customer installed the NetVault Software Client version on the Virtual Machine.
We made sure that the Windows Firewall on the Client and NetVault Server were disabled.
We then made sure that the communication from NetVault Server to Client and vice-versa was successful by entering the following commands on the NetVault Server and Client:
a] From server: ping of client hostname, nslookup of Client IP Address.
b] From client: ping of server hostname, nslookup of Server IP Address.
c] From Server CLI: telnet [IP Address from Client] 20031
d] From Client CLI: telnet [IP Address from Server] 20031
We also made sure that the ESX Server Firewall was also setup correctly, as the Client was installed there and then rebooted the ESX Server:
/usr/sbin/esxcfg-firewall -allowIncoming
/usr/sbin/esxcfg-firewall -allowOutgoing
Also re-installed the NetVault Client in the supported way and still the NetVault Client couldn't be added to the NetVault Server.
The NetVault Server also wasn’t installed the supported way and therefore performed the following installation steps whilst logged in as an Administrator:
1] Uninstall NetVault Server with Add/Remove Programs in Windows.
2] Delete the Quest Software directory.
3] Remove any NetVault / Quest Software items from the Software directory under HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE items on Regedit.
4] Rebooted the NetVault Server.
5] Stored the NVBU 8.6.1 Build 9 zipped Binary locally on the NetVault Server and unzipped it with Administrator rights, (the installation shouldn't be run from a network share, or copy installation files from a network share).
6] Run the Setup.exe whilst no AntiVirus Software running.
7] Follow on screen defaults.
8] Reboot NetVault Server.
Further installation information is within the NetVault Installation Upgrade Guide on the www.quest.com website.
Now the Client could be added with no error messages.
