In this topology:
NVBU_SERVER is the Quest NVBU Server.
ABC-EMAIL-1234 is the Exchange Cluster Virtual Client created in the NetVault server.
ABC-EMAIL-12345 is the Exchange Server which is the Current Active node
ABC-EMAIL-5678 is the second Exchange Server node where the APM fails to launch Proxy Master
In each node of the DAG there is installed one Quest NVBU Client.
If a backup is started, then the Quest NVBU Virtual Client will contact with the Quest NVBU software in ABC-EMAIL-12345 (The Active node), and this Quest NVBU Client in ABC-EMAIL-12345 will be in charge of the Backup by starting the Quest NVBU Plug-in for Exchange Proxy Masters processes in the rest of the nodes in the DAG.
As we can see on the logs bellow, the job fails with: Failed to launch Proxy Master on 'ABC-EMAIL-5678' (The second node).
Information -Date and time- 826 Schedule -NV Server- Starting phase 1 on ABC-EMAIL-1234
The Backup fails, because the Quest NVBU software in the Client of active node in the DAG is not able to start the Proxy Masters in the rest of the Quest NVBU Clients in the others nodes in the DAG.
The reason is because the network location of the other Quest NVBU Clients in the DAG is unknown to the active node.
Below is a procedure to make visible to the Quest NVBU software in one node the network location of the all the nodes in the DAG.
The solution is to modify the file Quest_NVBU_Installation_Directory\etc\machines.dat of all physical nodes of the DAG.
Make sure that you save a copy of the original machines.dat before modifying.
1. First try to get a copy of the file Quest_NVBU_Installation_Directory\etc\machines.dat (The file machines.dat of the NetVault Server machine)
Look at the Stanzas created for each one of the Quest NVBU Clients in the DAG: [ABC-EMAIL-12345] and [ABC-EMAIL-5678]
2. Then, Log in to each physical node of the Cluster Exchange and modify its Quest_NVClient_Installation_Directory\etc\machines.dat
In this example we will use the information on the machines.dat of the NetVault server to modify the machines.dat for the two Quest NVBU Clients in the DAG: ABC-EMAIL-12345, ABC-EMAIL-5678.
Stanza is an entry for each client on the machines.dat file that looks like:
[ABC-EMAIL-5678]
Type=ZZZZ
UDP Fragment Size=ZZZZ
Server=ZZZZZ
Description=
NVVersion=ZZZZ
NVBuildLevel=ZZ
Networks=ZZZ.ZZZ.ZZZ.ZZZ
Preferred Address=ZZZ.ZZZ.ZZZ.ZZZ
Contact Address=ZZZ.ZZZ.ZZZ.ZZZ
Fixed entry=ZZZZ
Id=ZZ
Version=ZZZZZZZZZZZ
Outside Firewall=ZZZZ
1)- Open Quest NVBU nvconfigurator in the first physical node for the DAG and in the 'Service' tab click 'Stop Service'. NVBU services are stopped.
2)- In windows, navigate to the 'etc' directory under the Quest NVBU installation, for example 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Quest Software\NetVault Backup\etc'.
3)- Save a copy of the file machines.dat, just in case. For example, 'copy machines.dat machines.dat_saved'
4)- Open with a text editor (for example notepad) the file machines.dat
5)- Copy from the file machines.dat of the NetVault Server the stanzas for all Exchange nodes [ABC-EMAIL-12345] and [ABC-EMAIL-5678] in this example.
(Note: check first if Quest NVBU Client [ABC-EMAIL-12345] and [ABC-EMAIL-5678] entry already exists in the file. If that is the case, then just replace the current stanza by the stanza copied from the machines.dat from the NetVault server)
6)-. Save the file
7)- Go back to Quest NVBU nvconfigurator and the 'Service' tab. Click 'Start Service'
8)- Now two things can happen: (1) NVBU Service in nvconfigurator says Current State: Running and stays like that, or (2) stays Running for few seconds and then changes to Stopped.
9)- If the Service stays as Running, then we are done for the first physical node of the DAG.
10)- If the Service says Running for a few seconds, and then Stopped, then we need to Start it again. Before start it again, in Windows open 'Task Manager'; in the 'Processes' tab, click in the column 'Image Name' to order the name of the processes by name. Then, look if there is a Quest NVBU process named 'nvstatsmngr.exe' or 'nvstatsmngr.exe*32'. If existing, right click in the Quest NVBU process and select 'End Process'. Select 'End Process' when prompted. Then you can close or leave Task Manager. Go back to Quest NVBU nvconfigurator, and in the tab 'Service' click 'Start Service'.
11)- Repeat all steps above for each one of the Exchange Servers physical nodes belonging to that DAG.
