Phase 1 backups to SmartDisk complete successfully but phase 2 duplication from SmartDisk to tape hang indefinitely in "reading from media" but no transfer occurs.
The logs show the target tape/drive are allocated and ready to receive data. Connection is made to SmartDisk to read data but failure to send data to the device is reported as follows:
----------
Replication method for stream cannot be used, as one of the devices does not support replication or is not compatible
Failed to send data to target device
Fatal error: Aborted by user
----------
The Optimized Replication feature is not supported between devices of different type.
While copying a backup from an NVSD device to another device type (for example, VTL, DR Series system, or Data Domain system) if you select the "Use Optimised Replication between Devices that Support this Feature" option, the Data Copy or Duplicate job will fail or hang. Starting with NVBU 9.2, this option is selected by default. Make sure that you disable this option for such jobs.
Optimized replication can only work between devices of the same type and version, eg. SmartDisk 2.0.1 to SmartDisk 2.0.1, or DR4100 v3 to DR4100 v3, or DataDomain DDBoost to DataDomain DDBoost.
WORAROUND
- Edit the job and go to the Advanced Options tab
- Edit the Advanced Options set to disable the "Use optimised replication between devices that support this feature"
- Save the Advanced Options set and save and submit the job which will now work.
STATUS
Bug 23046 will be resolved in future versions of NVBU 10.x
