A VM was deleted by mistake.
In an attempt to recover it, a copy of the VM is restored from backup with default options, i.e targeting the original datastore.
All conditions are met for a successful restore:
- There is sufficient space to restore the VM,
- The user peforming the restore has full permissions,
- and the VM does not exist already on the datastore.
However, the job fails with the following error:
------------
Failed to add VM to target server's inventory

Finally, the steps described the following 2 KBs have been followed without any change:
- KB 98835
https://support.quest.com/netvault-backup/kb/98835
- VMware KB :
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2021618
- First verify the VMware plugin configuration:
Are all you ESX servers added directly and separately to the VMware plugin?
or
Is only the vCenter server managing the ESX server added to the VMware Pluing?
- If you have added the vCenter server, please go through the above mentioned KB articles to try diassociating the host from the vCenter server.
- If you had added your ESXi servers separately to the VMware plugin, ESXi 5 and onwards will not allow you to restore directly to a datastore via the ESXi server if it is being managed by a vCenter server.
In which case you will have to add the vCenter server to the plugin to perform the restore via the vCenter server and not directly through an ESX host.
