After migrating mailboxes from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange using Migrator for Notes To Exchange (MNE), mailboxes sizes are larger.
Notes and Exchange each have different data storage structures, therefore the mailbox sizes are usually different on both ends.
The size difference is caused by a few different aspects
1. Single instancing is lost during the migration and this is a leading contributor in the larger mailboxes.
2. Notes API's are used to extract and convert images which can cause growth in file size.
3. Notes Views, the MigrateViews setting in the Notes migrator determines whether and how the Data Migration Wizard will migrate server-mail items that occur within Notes views. Migrating items from all views can greatly change the mailbox size
For example:
0 (default): No views are migrated.
1: Items are migrated only from the first view in which they are found.
2: Items are migrated from all views in which they are found.
4. The type of native compression used by each product is also different, resulting in size differences.
An increase in file size is normal behavior, and it is recommended to allot for more storage capacity on the Exchange server.
Typically it is expected to see an increase in size of 1 to 3 times the original Notes mailbox.
This number can vary depending on what is actually being migrated from each mailbox but is a general standard.
WORKAROUND:
See below a typical configuration:
[Exchange]
ExtractEmbeddedImage=1
MaxExtractedImageArea=307200
A setting of 307200 pixels would limit an image with a 4:3 aspect ratio to a maximum resolution of 640x480. The table below provides some other sample setting values that could be used:
Note: Parameter ExtractEmbeddedImages has to be enabled for parameter MaxExtractedImageArea to work.
Note: Please be aware that source data containing Bitmaps will not show up in OWA. This is because Bitmaps are stored in the Notes email using a different record type than other images. Our Dev team is working to get this bug (TFS#734528) fixed in a future release.
