User is unable to retrieve archived items when accessing shared mailboxes or public folders
Users cannot open attachments from archived messages in shared folders
Archive Manager Exchange Edition uses Microsoft VBScript for retrieval in Outlook. By default, VBScript is disabled in Outlook for Public Folders and Shared Mailboxes (any mailbox imported into Outlook outside of the main mail user). This will manifest by showing malformed email with no attachments on opening an archived message in these circumstances.
To solve the issue, perform the following steps to enable scripting in Outlook for Public Folders or Shared Mailboxes:
1. Click File > Options.
2. On the Outlook Options window, click Trust Center > Trust Center Settings.
3. On the E-mail Security tab, select Allow script in shared folders, Allow script in public folders or both depending on the user's needs.
Enforcing Scripting in Public Folders and Shared Mailboxes via Group Policy
Note: You will need to have the appropriate Administrative Templates for the versions of Outlook you are using before applying this policy (We are using Outlook 2010 for demonstration). Make sure you are familiar with editing group policies before editing them as they can have serious effects on your domain.
1. Create a new policy or edit an existing policy to open the Group Policy Management Editor.
2. Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Outlook (appropriate version) > Outlook Options > Other > Advanced.
3. For shared folders, in the right window double click on ‘Do not allow Outlook object model scripts to be run for shared folders’.
4. Select ‘Disabled’, and then click on ‘OK’.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the object ‘Do not allow Outlook object model scripts to be run for public folders’ if you would like to allow scripting in public folders.
6. Exit the Group Policy Editor and your new policy should be ready to go.
