Note:
The intention of this document is to provide general quick information concerning upgrading. This document cannot cover all the possible factors and variables (permissions, server roles, size restrictions, desired data/settings to be saved/removed etc.) that are involved with installing an enterprise level application. This has been created with the assumption that the individual whom is installing/upgrading the product has previous experience installing enterprise level applications.

Complete installation (database and application on same server):
Note: Confirm that there are not any gatherings running or scheduled to run during this operation.
This is the easier of the two installs, where as an individual can simply begin an installation by choosing complete as an install option. If the same account is being used that installed the previous version, and the same install drive is being used, then there should be no prompt request for a reboot. There are no "forced" reboots if this is not the case. If there is an option to migrate previous data, this is what you wish to do, unless you wish to clear the database (danger).
Warning:
If you wish to clear the database, then unselect the checkbox option of migrate. This will DELETE the old data, this option is not selected by default, and this is usually never wished to be done.
Distributed installation (database on remote SQL / application residing on application server):
Note: Confirm that there are not any gatherings running or scheduled to run during this operation.
On the database side, (please make sure no tasks are running on the application side), then run either the installer (choose custom and deselect the application portions, choosing only the database portion) careful here if running the upgrade this way, because you will have the option to either migrate or delete the existing database (as noted above as well). You can also run the MessageStatsMigration.sql script as well on the Sql server (this script is located in the SQL folder in the Messagestats install directory, some DBA's prefer scripts however the result is the same, it is up to you which method you prefer.
On the application side, reverse the above logic/steps, meaning begin the install, then choose custom and de-select the database and start the install, please make sure no tasks are running first, you will notice that most of the blank fields during the install are populated for you, the license information will/should also be recalled.
