The MessageStats Service stops during an Automated gathering, yet an Interactive gathering that includes the same tasks against the same servers is successful.
This problem can occur if Exchange Server, Exchange System Manager, or the Exchange Administrator tool is installed on the same system as the MessageStats Console. Unfortunately installing both Outlook (which is required by Messagestats) and Exchange or Exchange Admin tools has many negative ramifications to Outlook, Exchange and other MAPI utilities such as Messagestats. It can lead to many errors due to conflicts in how applications use MAPI.
To resolve this issue, uninstall Exchange and\or the Exchange Admin tools (Exchange System Manager or Exchange Administrator).
Stephen Griffin, a Microsoft Escalation Engineer who is the author of MFCMAPI (Microsoft Foundation Classes MAPI) tool, and a well known authority on MAPI-related subjects has the following blog posting regarding problems with having both Exchange or Exchange Admin tools and Outlook installed on the same system: http://blogs.msdn.com/stephen_griffin/archive/2004/07/03/172257.aspx.
Microsoft simply does not support Outlook and Exchange server installed on one computer, nor do they support Outlook and Exchange Admin tools installed on one computer; therefore, Quest cannot support that environment either, since we simply cannot escalate related cases to Microsoft.
Aside from the blog posting, there are a number of Microsoft KB articles about this issue, including the following:
