Using native Exchange 2007 may not have access to Exchange System Manager (ESM) because that only comes with Exchange 2000 and 2003.
So what should be used as the MAPI subsystem provider?
If Quest MessageStats (QMS) 6.1.0 or earlier is being used and if there is no access to ESM, Outlook 2007 or alternatively Outlook 2003 can be used as the MAPI provider.
The Outlook MAPI subsystem, commonly referred to by Microsoft as client MAPI will allow MessageStats to gather all but the following MAPI/CDO information:
- Content & Attachment information (this requires server MAPI, also known as ESM or the MAPI+CDO download)
- Inherited mailbox permissions (this requires CDOEXM which only comes with ESM)
Once Quest MessageStats (QMS) 6.1.1 is available this recommendation will change. If QMS 6.1.1 or later is being used and there is no access to ESM then MAPI+CDO can be used as the MAPI provider . This download contains the MAPI and CDO bits (but not CDOEXM) from ESM 2003, and therefore is a server MAPI provider. Using this provider, MessageStats will be able to gather all but the following MAPI/CDO information:
- Inherited mailbox permissions (this requires CDOEXM which only comes with ESM)
The version of Mapi + CDO at the time of publication of this Quest Software support article was 1.2.1
