Extractor.exe is failing. "Could not determine required MTF file count from LS backup files. Check supplied backup filenames" -
Description
We are trying to convert our LiteSpeed generated backup file to a native SQL Server backup file format, using LiteSpeed's Extractor.exe. It is failing failing with:
"Could not determine required MTF file count from LS backup files"
"Check supplied backup file names"We ran the 'xp_restore_verify_only' extended stored procedure on the backup file and it says the backup set is valid.The version of this LiteSpeed is different though. It is LiteSpeed version 8.0.4.9. Newer than the version on we are running the Extractor.exe. -
Cause
Version incompatibilities are the problem--generating the backups on LiteSpeed version 8.0.4.9 and trying to convert them to native using LiteSpeed version 7.1. Older versions of LiteSpeed cannot read backups created by newer versions of LiteSpeed. -
Resolution
Run the Extractor.exe from a LiteSpeed version 8.0.4.9 as well to read that backup. Consistent version with the one that created the backup.The extractor is a stand alone exe. You can copy the Extractor.exe from LiteSpeed version 8.0.4.9 and move it to whatever server or workstation you want to use it on. There is no need to install Litespeed just to get the extractor. -
Additional Information
if the error is still seen after using a consistent version of LiteSpeed, then the file header is either encrypted or corrupted.
