Network Device tile

The Network Device tile shows summarized information about the performance of a network device. The tile bar indicates the device name.

How to Get Here
To navigate to this view from the Service Operations Console dashboard:

On the Service Operations Console dashboard, select the Network Devices service.

On the Dependencies tab, in the Show box, ensure that Services is selected.

On the Dependencies tab, click More Devices.
The More Device Details dialog box appears with the Summary tab open, showing one or more Network Device tiles.
To navigate to this view from the Dependency Browser:

On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, choose Dependency Mapping > Dependency Browser.

On the Dependency Browser that appears in the display area, click View Dependencies by Host.

On the navigation panel, under Host Selector, click the host whose dependencies you want to explore.

On the View Dependencies by Host page, on the Graph tab, click the host.
The View Dependencies by Host page refreshes, showing the dependency map.

On the Graph tab, click the host whose network devices you want to explore.

Complete one of the following procedures.

In the Host Details dialog box that appears, open the Network Details tab.
If there are any monitored network devices that are associated with the selected host, they are represented by the Network Device tiles appearing on this tab.

In the Host Details dialog box that appears, open the Dependency Details tab.

In the list of dependencies that appears, click an entry in the Detail column.
In the Dependency Detail dialog box that appears, on the Dependency Details tab, if this dependency is associated with a network device, the Network Device tile representing that device appears.

Alarms. The counts of Fatal, Critical, and Warning alarms. Hovering over an alarm count shows a dwell containing a list of alarms generated against the device. For more information about alarms in Foglight, see the Foglight User Help.

Health history bar. The color-coded bar represents the alarm state of the monitored application over the time range period selected in the Service Operations Console dashboard. The color of the bar changes over that period depending on the alarm state. Red indicates that the monitored application is in Fatal state, orange indicates Critical, yellow means Warning, and green is for the Normal State.

Interfaces Count. The number of network interfaces associated with the device.
 
•
Network Utilization. The network utilization incurred by the device over the selected time range.
 
•
Packets Received. The total number of inbound data packets received by the device.
 
•
Packets Sent. The total number of inbound data packets sent by the device.
 
•
Title bar. The name of the network
 
•
Transfer Rate. The network transfer rate for the selected device, measured as an amount of data transmitted every second.

Rules

Foglight allows you to create flexible rules that can be applied to complex, interrelated data from multiple sources within your distributed system. You can associate several different actions with a rule, configure a rule so that it does not fire repeatedly, and associate a rule with schedules to define when it should and should not be evaluated.
Different types of data can be used in rules, including registry variables, raw metrics, derived metrics, and topology object properties.
There are two types of rules in Foglight: simple rules and multiple-severity rules. A simple rule has a single condition, and can be in one of three states: Fire, Undefined, or Normal. A multiple-severity rule can have up to five severity levels: Undefined, Fatal, Critical, Warning, and Normal.
Rule conditions are regularly evaluated against monitoring data (metrics and topology object properties collected from your monitored environment and transformed into a standard format). Therefore, the state of the rule can change if the data changes. For example, if a set of monitoring data matches a simple rule’s condition, the rule enters the Fire state. If the next set does not match the condition, the rule exits the Fire state and enters the Normal state.
A rule condition is a type of expression that can be true or false. When it evaluates to true, the rule is said to fire, causing any actions that are associated with the rule or severity level to be performed. You can configure a rule to perform one or more actions upon entering or exiting each state. When a multiple-severity rule fires, an alarm also appears in Foglight for NMS Integration.

When service degradations are detected, Foglight sends alerts to the event console. Optionally, Foglight can be configured to send emails, pager messages, or perform other actions you define. Performance data can be viewed, analyzed and reported using Foglight for NMS Integration.
Foglight for NMS Integration includes a number of predefined rules that capture the expert knowledge of our network specialists and are used to monitor the health of your network. Foglight allows you to modify these rules or create your own flexible rules that can be applied to complex, interrelated data from multiple sources within your distributed system.
In this section, rule descriptions are organized into logical groupings. To see a rule description, select the appropriate grouping from the topics listed below.
Many of the rules listed and described in this chapter have thresholds, for example, standard deviations, utilization percentages, defined within them. Those thresholds are default values predefined in the registry.
