Oracle Initialization

During startup, Spotlight on Oracle reads into memory all details of segments and extents allocated in the database (DBA_EXTENTS). Having this information in memory allows Spotlight on Oracle to identify the exact location of certain wait conditions. For example, it allows Spotlight on Oracle to display a table or index currently being read in a drilldown.

Unfortunately, the process of reading this data into memory can take up to a few minutes and requires significant computing resources on systems with many segments and extents. For this reason, you may choose to use the Fast Initialize setting to prevent Spotlight on Oracle from caching this information. Using fast initialize also reduces memory consumption on the server side.

To change the Fast Initialize setting

  1. Open a Spotlight on Oracle connection.
  2. Click View | Options
  3. Click Data Collection | Oracle Initialization
  4. Select one of the following options:

    Option Description
    Fast initialize off

To use the normal (slow) initialize mode every time you connect to a database.

Caution: It may take several minutes to connect to the database.

    Fast initialize on

To use fast initialize mode every time you connect to a database.

    This is the default.

Note: Spotlight on Oracle may display incomplete information in some drilldowns:
