Toad for SQL Server 8.1 - Installation Guide

Compare Differences in Data

Data Diff Viewer allows to compare data contained in the tables and/or result sets from the current or different Editors.

Notes:

  • If you want to synchronize data, use Data Compare instead of the Data Diff Viewer.
  • You cannot modify files in the Diff Viewer at this time.

To compare differences in data

  1.  Select one of the following:
    • Select Tools | Compare | Data Diff Viewer and drag&drop tables for comparison.
    • Right-click data in the Editor's result set and select Compare To | Set_number.

You can also save a result set and later use it as a historical comparison.

    • Right-click a table in the Object Explorer and select Send To | Diff Viewer as Data.
  2. Customize column mapping and set comparison key.

    Notes:

    • You can map a column to any column that contains a data type that is compatible or can be converted to a compatible data type.
    • In case of automatic mapping primary key columns or columns with unique index are selected as comparison key. When you map columns manually, you can select any column as a comparison key.
    • To exclude columns from comparison clear the Compare checkbox beside each column you want to exclude.
  3. After comparison, you can view the following information in the Data Diff Viewer window:

    • Details pane—Displays the records for the table

    • Row Viewer tab (bottom)—Displays side-by-side differences between rows. The differences are highlighted.

    • Cell Viewer tab (bottom)—Displays the full contents of a cell when you select the cell in the Details pane. This is useful if the data in the cell is too large to display in the Details pane. The differences are highlighted like in Text Diff Viewer.
    Use this... To...

Export contents of the Details pane to an Excel spreadsheet.

Open the Cell Viewer that allows to see cell values. Row Viewer will be opened as well.
    View all compared records.
View all records (source only, target only and different) except equal.

(Source only) View records that exist on the source object, but are missing from the target object.

(Target only) View records that exist on the target object, but are missing from the source object.

(Different) View records that exist on both objects, but have different values.

View records that are equal on both objects.

List the source object columns and the target object columns separately. All source columns will be shown first and then all target columns.

When cleared source and target object columns are displayed in pairs according to their mapping.

Hide all columns where values are the same on both objects.
Navigate between different records. Use to go the next or previous record within the currently selected column.

    Tips:

    • You can also open files to compare by clicking beside the drop-down list at the top of each pane.
    • or signs in the Comparison Status indicate the rows containing duplicated values in comparison key. In most cases, it occurs because you manually selected a non-unique column as a comparison key. To resolve this issue, select a unique column in Column Selection dialog.
