The operating system on the host machine provides Oracle with key resources such as CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network access. Shortfalls in any of these resources may affect the overall performance of your Oracle system.
To open the OS Performance page
Click Operating System | OS Performance.
Tip: To open the related Spotlight on Windows or Spotlight on Unix connection, click the arrow next to the Operating System drilldown icon.
Charts on the OS Performance Page
The following charts in the OS Performance page display statistics on the operating-system resources that may cause a performance bottleneck:
Chart | Description |
---|---|
CPU Utilization |
The percentage of time spent in user mode and in privileged mode.
High levels of CPU utilization may trigger the CPU Busy Alarm. |
Disk I/O |
The number of disk transfers per second. Disk IO bottlenecks may trigger the Free Buffer Waits Alarm or Write Complete Wait Alarm. See also Improve Database Writer Performance and Improve Database I/O. Note: Spotlight on Oracle does NOT display information in the Disk IO chart if the database is running on Digital Unix. |
Paging and scan rates |
Paging activity. This includes:
|
Load Average/Run Queue |
The length of the Processor queue where processes are waiting to be executed. Processes in this queue will run when the CPU becomes available. A long queue may indicate that the machine you are diagnosing is under-configured for its workload. You may need to check which OS processes are consuming CPU resources. OS Processes Page |
Network |
The total rate of data traffic across all network interfaces, measured in packets/second. Separate graphs on the chart indicate the rates at which data packets are being:
|
Available Memory | The amount of available virtual and physical memory on the database machine. A shortage in the amount of physical memory may trigger the Low Free Physical RAM Alarm. |
Note: Differences between versions of operating systems mean that Spotlight is unable to collect all O/S statistics in all environments. The topic O/S statistics not reported list statistics that are not reported by Spotlight on Oracle for each operating system. Operating System Connection / Statistics
