1. Check for entry in the oratab file (/var/opt/oracle) (Sun can also locate this file in : /etc/oratab) 2. Check for correct syntax and case sensitivity for Oracle SID 3. Assure no (/) prior to the colon(:) in the oratab file 4. Verify there are no spaces or padding on left margin prior to the Oracle SID entries in the oratab file 5. Verify the oratab file exists and there are not duplicate oratab files 6. Must have full the full path to the Oracle Home (can not use links) 7. Verify the Oracle binary located in the $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory has the set user id (sticky bit ) enabled ((chmod 4755 the oracle binary))
