For major release upgrade such as 9.0 which involve changes on variable directory, you must upgrade existing var dir. Installing in a separate prod dir with a dummy var dir and pointing $SP_SYS_VARDIR to the old var dir is not supported.
To preserve the compatibility when replicating between different versions of SharePlex, refer to the KB Article # 230260.
