To migrate the NetVault Server to another system, follow these steps:
- Perform a backup of the original server’s NetVault database (NVDB) using the NetVault Database plugin.
- On the target system, if necessary, uninstall any previous NetVault software found on the system.
- Install the same NetVault Server version onto the target machine making sure to use the same NetVault name as the previous server.
- Add the storage device used to store the NVDB backup from step 1 to the new installation.
- Scan the device to load the backups information. If it was stored on a tape device, the initial scan will show the tapes as foreign. A second scan will be required to acquire the data information.
- Create a Restore job to reload the NVDB information. Select all fields excluding Keys, as they are machine specific and will not be valid on the new server. Logs can also be excluded for a faster migration.
- During the NVDB restoration, the WebUI will close (please do not login again). In order to monitor the restore, check the status of the NetVault Process Manager service. When the restore has completed, restart the NetVault services manually.
- Remove and re-add the devices in Manage Devices window. This is required because the Media Manager database restore will have overwritten the device entries added in step 4 with those of the original server. Connection to the device/s must be refreshed.
- Source and target set must also be bounced.
- If necessary, re-add missing clients in Manage Client WebUI window.
- With the migration, NetVault machine ID has also changed. Transfer the NetVault License to the new Machine ID in web support portal. You will receive an e-mail with a new license file.
WARNING: Do not keep the old NetVault server running after the migration. Having two servers with the same NetVault name on the network will cause many communication problems. If you need to keep the NetVault server running as a client, remove the NetVault server installation and install the NetVault client software. You can then specify a different NetVault name during the installation or use the nvclientname utility to change the name of the client after the installation.
