1) Make sure the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is enabled and started
2) Makes sure the database(s) to backup are mounted (the plugin will by default attempt to mount any dismounted database before backup)
3) In command line check whether the VSS Microsoft Exchange Writer is listed in stable state by running the following command:
vssadmin list writers
Microsoft Exchange Writer must be listed as it is used to perform VSS snapshots necessary for backup.
If the Microsoft Exchange Writer is mising perform the following to enable to Microsoft Exchange VSS writer:

Also note that backing up the registry is advised before any change to it.
Finally the below procedure should be done outside of production hours as it requires restarting the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.
- on the Exchange server open and edit the registry to make sure the following key exists and has a below value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem\
"Disable Exchange Writer" DWORD=0
If this Key exist with a value of 1, the Microsoft Exchange Writer will be disabled
- now restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service and attempt another backup
