How to use Naming Standards to apply Abbreviations from Physical to Logical? (4310141)

Description:

We know we can abbreviate Physical names from Logical names using Naming Standards.  Is it possible to do the same from Physical to Logical, i.e. apply Naming Standard to abbreviate Logical names from Physical names?

Solution:

Yes, until erwin DM 9.8, the abbreviations worked from Logical to Physical, but with erwin DM 2018 R1, it is now possible to change the Logical names from Physical names using Glossary in the Naming Standards. Here is how to do it.

• Create a Naming Standard entry:

• In Naming Standard Properties, populate the Glossary as needed. Also, make sure ‘Is Active’ and ‘Physical to Logical’ check boxes are selected (see below):

• In Actions | Model Naming Options | Name Mapping tab, select the boxes as needed:

• Switch to the Physical side of the model and create Entities ‘Emp’, ‘Dept’, and ‘Cust’. Also, add Columns named ‘id’ and ‘desc’ as follows:

• Switch to Logical side and see that the names have been changed as per the entries in the Glossary:

• You can also use this during Reverse Engineering. For that simply save a model with the settings above (without any Entities) as a Template file.
• During Reverse Engineering, use the Template file instead of the default template:

That should also change the Logical names as set in the Glossary.

When you are done with that and no longer need the Glossary to be applied from Physical to Logical, simply uncheck the box in the Naming Standards Properties for ‘Physical to Logical’.  It will then work as regular i.e. from ‘Logical to Physical’.  Also, note that, as always this will work as long as there is inheritance intact between Logical and Physical names.  If the names are hardened or somehow the Physical side is no longer maintaining its inheritance from its Logical side.
