Can I emulate multiple Exchange versions from the same Recovery Manager for Exchange server? -
Description
Often there is a requirement to emulate more that one type of Exchange server when restoring from backup. This could be due to a mixed environment or when restoring from old backups from a previous version of Exchange.

Cause
Recovery Manager for Exchange can emulate an Exchange server by making use of the installed Exchange Management tools. Multiple Exchange Management tools installed on the same server is not supported and if this happens then only one of the installed tools will work properly.

Resolution
WORKAROUND 1
If there is a requirement to restore from multiple versions of Exchange using emulation at the same time then Recovery Manager for Exchange must be installed on separate servers and each server will only be used to restore one Exchange versions backups.
Example: Server 1 has Recovery Manager for Exchange installed and the Exchange Management tools for 2007 (meeting all other prerequisites) and will be used to restore Exchange 2007 backups via Emulation. Server 2 has Recovery Manager for Exchange installed and the Exchange Management tools for 2010 (meeting all other prerequisites) and will be used to restore Exchange 2010 backups via Emulation.
WORKAROUND 2
If the recovery of the different versions can be done sequentially then the corresponding Exchange Management tools can be installed at one time, perform the recovery using emulation, then uninstall one version of the Exchange Management tools, install another version, perform the recovery corresponding to this version of Exchange etc untill all required Exchange versions have been recovered.
Please note also of the following requirement:
- A 32-bit operating system is required to restore backups of Exchange 2000 or 2003 using Exchange emulation.
- A 64-bit operating system is required to restore backups of Exchange 2007 or 2010 using Exchange emulation. -

The User Guide states the following :
"If Recovery Manager and Backup Exec are installed on the same computer, ensure that the
computer has the following software installed:
• Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools or Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Administrator supplied
