When restoring windows 2008 system state to an Identical but different hardware platform the new server needs to be rebooted after the restore completes.
When the new server reboot we see the following error:
Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
2. Change your Language settings and click Next
3. Click "Repair your computer"
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
This is common side-effect of moving a Windows 2008 installation from one machine to another. The new Windows bootloader (BCD) references a particular disk ID - this disk ID changes when a new system is installed elsewhere, and our system state restore does not change it back. Therefore, BCD will fail to find any partition to boot from.
The best way to recover from this is to boot off the Windows CD in repair mode, opening the recovery command prompt and running
This will scan the disk for Windows installations and rebuild the BCD referencing the new disk signature.
