Title: Filename truncated at foreign character in backup selection display
Date: Mar-2007
NV Version: 7.4.x
OS Version: Any
Application version: NA
Plugin version: NA
Description: How foreign characters are handled in Netvault Backup displays.
Symptoms: When creating a selection set, file and directories containing foreign characters (i.e. vowels with accents etc) are cut off at the point where a special character appears in that name. Expansion of these shortened directories does, however, result in the correct display of the contents of the opened directory.
The same symptoms are shown during a browse of a restore.
This makes it impossible to distinguish between similar cut filenames with special characters during a restore.
The NetVault GUI is currently not Unicode-enabled. Therefore, it historically has issues displaying Unicode characters. If the file's foreign characters are encoded in extended ASCII they will be displayed correctly, if they are encoded in Unicode, they will not be displayed correctly.
However, some parts of the GUI use a conversion process to map Unicode characters to multibyte-encoding in order to display them. Depending on the characteristics of the file name, the locale settings in NetVault and on the OS, this works in most cases.
All of this will be resolved once there is a new NetVault GUI that fully supports Unicode. Until then, there will be some display issues. However, as the file system plugins are already fully Unicode aware, there is no issue with backing up and restoring those files.
In summary these issues are cosmetic and relate to the GUI not being able to interpret information from the plugin, the plugin handles the files correctly when writing to a tape and after a restore.
This problem will be resolved in future versions of Netvault.
