Date – May 2008
Affected Product & Version – NetVault: Backup 8.0 update 1 and 2
Affected Module & Version – Any
OS Version – Any
Description:
Restore may fail if backup data spanned multiple tapes on specific tape drives.
Symptoms:
When restoring backup data that spanned multiple tapes you may receive the following error “XX items and their contents could not be restored”. This error could occur on many different files, causing these files not to be restored. The restore job may also complete successfully yet multiple files are missing after the completion of the restore job. This issue is dependent on the data backed up as well as the files and directories selected for the restore.
-Currently this issue has been confirmed using the following drives.
Quantum LTO3/LTO4 and HP LTO3 drives.
-The following backup job types will also be affected if the original backup data met the above conditions.
Data Copy, Duplication and Consolidate jobs that fail with the following error:
"Attempt to save a stream with missing segments" can be seen in the binary log and the backup fails.
Reason:
In specific circumstances, NetVault 8.0 U1 & U2 recognizes a problem with the streams it has duplicated - they are short by one block. Consequently, an error is reported and the job is aborted before the index is written. This only happens when the data that is duplicated spans target media - if all data fits onto one piece of target media, you will not experience this fault.
