Title: Exchange Plugin Backup with VSS option creates strange shadow copy drives and cannot deleted either.
Date: Feb 11
Product & Version: Exchange Plugin 4.0.10 and up
OS Version: Windows
Module & Version: N/A
Application version: N/A
Symptoms:
-VSS option selected for Exchange Plugin backups creates strange shadow copy drives and cannot be delete again either (see screenshot).
-Windows Disk Manager doesn't show the shadow drives listed (see screenshot).
-Have to set to ESE on the backup option instead and would like to have these drives erased.
There are two solutions that can be performed:
1. Normally VSS should have cleaned up the copies after NetVault completed backing up to tape or VTL. These drives can be removed by right clicking the drive and the selecting "Configure Shadow Copies", then you can select the volume and disable it.
2. If the shadow copies were already disabled on the volumes try and enable them again, but if you disabled them immediately thereafter you might receive an
error "0x8004231d", Shadow copy storage association in use.
Vssadmin-utility will probably show multiple shadow copies and not able to delete them.
Trick is to set the allocation limit for shadow copies so low that they get deleted automatically.
After that you can enable and disable shadow copies in the GUI again and the mysterious "ghost" drives will disappear.
