Product & Version: All
OS Version: All
Module & Version: All
Application version: Ontap 7.0.4 and below
Symptoms:
When running restores from an NDMP attached drive, the jobs fails with an error "Failed to space to data on stream".
Additionally, an information message is logged: "NDMP: NORMAL 0: Unable to seek to location ### on tape."
Reason:
When using an NDMP attached drive, NetVault does not control the device directly. Instead, it sends a position request through NDMP, and the filer's NDMP daemon then interprets this and issue the required command.
Engineering has determined in our fault NCG-303 that in Ontap versions until and including 7.0.4, the filer ends up issuing an illegal SCSI space command with a value > 8388607 for position requests to large offsets on the tape. The correct behaviour would be to split this request up into several smaller space commands with values = 7.0.5. The NetApp Bug ID for this is BURT 159017.
