Product & Version: NetVault 8.0u1 and higher
OS Version: Windows
Module & Version: VaultDR Online 2.3 and lower
Application version: N/A
Symptoms:
When using NetVault 8u1 or higher to restore a VaultDR online backup that was performed with VaultDR Online Plugin 2.3 or lower, the restore fails with a channel error and the following messages are logged:
"Unable to get the mover to listen"
"Failed to read restore stream data with size: 554"
"Error: Failed to restore partition table for device: xyz"
"Failed to start NDMP restore transfer for Partition: xyz"
Reason:
With NetVault 8u1 there was a change to the Core regarding the NDMP functionality, which is the protocol VaultDR uses to transfer the data. Among other things, NetVault 8 now checks the correct alignment of data. Unfortunately, older versions of the VaultDR Online Plugin did not pad the data correctly to end on a block boundary.
The problem has been resolved in VaultDR Online Plugin for Windows version 2.3u1. The data is now padded correctly and can be restored with NetVault 8u1 and higher.
Existing backups performed with older VaultDR Online versions don't have the correct padding and cannot be restored with NetVault 8. If you need to restore such older savesets, you are advised to downgrade to NetVault 7.4.5u4 for the restore.
Please note that the databases from different NetVault versions are not interchangable, so downgrading will involve:
1.) NetVault database backup in version 8
2.) Uninstallation of version 8
3.) Installation of version 7.4.5u4
4.) Reconfiguration of the device holding the VaultDR Online saveset
5.) Scanning in the tape
6.) Restoring
7.) Uninstallation of 7.4.5u4
8.) Reinstallation of version 8,
9.) Reconfiguration of the device holding the NetVault database backup
10.) Scanning in the tape
11.) Restoring the NetVault database
