Many users express the need to change their clients' Machine names in NetVault (often to reflect their Hostname). Customers must be aware that changing a client's name won't be possible if this client has a server version of Netvault installed.
Also, although changing the client's name is straight forward, all jobs for this client will have to be redefined as there is no other way to update the server's nvdb information about this "new" client.
For more information on this topic, please see the Administration Module 1 Introduction to NetVault Backup-Web-based Training
If the client has not been added to the server yet, the recommended way is to uninstall, and reinstall the Netvault Client , and choose a new name during install.
However, if your client is a MAC (install does not have option to input Client name) or you can not uninstall, here is another option:
Stop Netvault Services on the Client machine.
edit ../netvault/config/configure.cfg file
Look for [machine] stanza at bottom of file
Line underneath says: NAME=
Change to desired name.
Save file and restart services. Name should now be changed.
If you are in production environment, pick a time when you will be able to restart the netvault services on both the server and client:
On the NetVault server:
1) Remove the original client in Client Management
2) Stop the Netvault services
3) Delete the ~netvault/gui/cachedpits/client_name directory
On the NetVault client you wish to change the name for
1) Stop the services
2) Open a teminal session and cd to ~netvault/util
3) type:
./nvclientname -clientname
Where is the required new name.
4) remove the ~netvault/etc/machines.dat file
5) remove ~netvault/gui/cachedpits/orig_name directory if it exists, where is the original name of the cli
