OS Version: Ontap
Application version: N/A

Description:
On occasions, when media errors are reported on NDMP-attached devices, we need to verify what the tape drive is reporting. This procedure enables error logging of tape drive diagnostic messages in the messages file on the filer.
1/ Make sure no backups are running to the tape device on the filer and kill all NDMP sessions, then restart the NDMP daemon using the following commands.
Logon to the filer as user “root”.
ndmpd killall
ndmpd stop
ndmpd start
2/To see the drives available to you that will require diagnostics enabled on them use the following command.
sysconfig -t
3/ Enable tape drive diagnostic mode :
mt -t nrst0a diag 1
mt -t nrst1a diag 1
...
Note: You need to issue this command for each drive if you have more than one.
4/ Run the failing backup or restore test
5/ After running tests switch off diagnostics on the tape devices
mt -t nrst0a diag 0
mt -t nrst1a diag 0
...
6/ Send in the binary log from NetVault showing the backup or test
7/ Send in the messages file from the filer for the period of time when NetVault ran the backup or test
