Affected NV Version: NetVault: Backup 7.4 and greater
OS Version: All supported Oracle RMAN APM platforms
Plugin version: Oracle RMAN 4.50
Application version: Oracle 9.2.x, 10.1.x, 10.2.x
Description:
Oracle RMAN restore of controlfile through the GUI fails with default options. You cannot use Oracle RMAN to restore control file to its default location using the NetVault GUI.
Symptoms:
The restore job will fail. Error messages will include:
RMAN-03002: failure of restore command at [date] [time]
RMAN-06496: must use the TO clause when the database is mounted or open
The Oracle RMAN APM GUI restore will only allow a controlfile restore to its default location if using RMAN catalog.
If you are not using an RMAN catalog, then controlfile restores cannot be done interactive from GUI and must be done from RMAN command prompt. Consult Oracle’s Backup and Recovery Reference for more details on restoring and recovering controlfiles using RMAN commands.
Further information can also be found in the BakBone Knowledge Base article 1930 “Oracle RMAN restore autobackup controlfile”
However, you can successfully restore the controlfile to another location using the ‘Rename’ facility in the Restore Selections screen. This will include the TO clause in the RMAN restore command. Consult Oracle’s Backup and Recovery Reference for details on recovering a database from a backup controlfile.
